Why Choose TFL 6219/C3VL2071 Electrically Insulated Bearings?

Coating the inner ring (bore) of a bearing is technically more challenging than coating the outer ring. TFL utilizes advanced plasma-spray robotics specifically calibrated for small curvature radii. This ensures that the VL2071 coating on our 6219 series is uniform, dense, and tightly bonded to the steel. This precision prevents the coating from cracking during installation onto the shaft, a common failure point in inferior inner-ring insulated bearings.

Features of 6219/C3VL2071

Common Applications of Electrically Insulated Bearings

Electrically insulated bearings with inner-ring insulation enhance equipment reliability by preventing raceway pitting, lubricant degradation, and premature failure. The coating on the inner ring is highly effective at isolating shaft voltage, while supporting smooth operation and proper load management. This configuration is especially valuable in designs where electrical current primarily affects internal rotating components.

Inner ring electrically insulated bearing, used for variable frequency motors

Electric Motors

In older DC traction motors used in mining haul trucks or locomotives—such as Hitachi DC series motors—the design often requires the bearing to electrically isolate the armature shaft from the grounded frame. In some cases, the housing fit is intentionally loose to allow for thermal expansion, making outer-ring insulation unreliable due to potential wear. The 6219/C3VL2071 (inner-ring insulated) bearing directly isolates the shaft, ensuring that stray currents from the commutator do not arc through the rolling elements.

Centrifugal Separators

High-speed centrifugal separators used in food processing or wastewater treatment—such as those manufactured by Alfa Laval—operate with rapidly rotating bowl assemblies. In certain worm-drive (scroll-driven) designs, the outer ring rotates with the bowl, while the inner ring is mounted on a stationary shaft. Under these conditions, centrifugal forces may cause coatings on the outer ring to delaminate. The 6219/C3VL2071 places the insulation layer on the stationary inner ring, providing a secure and stable barrier that prevents electrostatic discharge generated by high-speed fluid friction.

Heavy-duty VL2071 inner ring insulated bearings for wire stranding machine maintenance.

Wire Stranding Machinery

In cable manufacturing, high-speed tubular stranding machines—produced by companies such as Niehoff or SKET—feature large rotating tubes. The bearings supporting these tubes often have a rotating outer ring, making outer-ring coating risky due to extreme rotational forces. The 6219/C3VL2071 is installed in the fixed support base of the rotor. The inner-ring insulation prevents grounding loops that could otherwise interfere with sensitive electronic tension control systems inside the stranding machine.

Q&A

What is the difference between VL0241 and VL2071?

The difference is the location of the electrical insulation. VL0241 has the ceramic coating on the Outer Ring, which is the most common type for standard motors. VL2071 has the coating on the Inner Ring. You should use VL2071 (this product) when your application has a rotating outer ring (like a wheel hub) or if the shaft provides a better seating surface for insulation than the housing.

Is the 6219/C3VL2071 harder to install than a standard bearing?

Great care must be taken during installation. Since the insulation is on the inner ring (the bore), you must use an induction heater to heat the bearing for mounting onto the shaft. Do not use a hammer or direct force on the inner ring face, as this could chip the ceramic coating. TFL recommends heating the bearing to approx. 80-100°C for a smooth slide-on fit to protect the insulation layer.
