General FAQ
Find quick answers to common inquiries about our technology, product compatibility, and ordering process.
To identify a bearing size, you need to measure three key dimensions using a Vernier caliper:
- Inner Diameter (d): The bore size of the inner ring.
- Outer Diameter (D): The external diameter of the outer ring.
- Width (B): The thickness of the bearing.
Note: Do not measure over the corner radiuses (chamfers), as this will give an incorrect reading.
Dimensionally, they are identical. The difference lies in the application and mounting:
- Outer Ring Coating (e.g., VL0241 / J20AA): The most common type. Used when the outer ring is stationary in the housing.
- Inner Ring Coating (e.g., VL2071 / J20B): Used when the outer ring rotates, or for larger bearings where press-fitting the outer ring might damage the coating.

No, it does not.
Although the ceramic coating (typically Aluminum Oxide) adds a layer of approximately 100-200µm, our insulated bearings are manufactured to strictly adhere to ISO standard tolerances.
We achieve this by slightly grinding the base steel before coating (undercutting) or controlling the coating process within the tolerance zone. This ensures that our insulated bearings are 100% dimensionally interchangeable with standard non-insulated bearings and will fit your existing housings and shafts perfectly.
If you cannot find your specific dimensions in the standard charts (SKF, FAG, or ISO series), TFL Bearings offers custom plasma spraying services.
We can apply high-quality electrical insulation coatings to almost any bearing type or size, including non-standard and imperial (inch) sizes. Please click the "Custom Solution" to send us your drawing or dimensions for a quick quote.
