The Unique Challenges of EV Traction Motors
EV drive-unit bearings operate under combined electrical, mechanical and thermal stress. Effective bearing selection must therefore consider more than basic load capacity—it must also account for inverter characteristics, shaft voltage, rotational speed, lubrication, temperature and grounding design.
Challenge 1: Identifying Electrical Bearing Damage
Problem Description: Noise or vibration from an EV drive unit does not automatically mean that the bearing has suffered electrical erosion. Similar symptoms may also result from mechanical fatigue, contamination, insufficient lubrication, incorrect clearance or gear damage.
Electrical bearing damage commonly appears as microscopic pitting, grey or frosted raceway surfaces, fluting patterns, darkened lubricant and recurring noise after a standard steel bearing has been replaced. Correctly identifying the failure mode is essential before selecting an insulated replacement.

Challenge 2: Finding the Correct Replacement Bearing
Problem Description: EV motor repairers do not always have access to the original motor drawings or complete bearing specifications. In many cases, only the removed bearing, an incomplete part number or the vehicle and motor model is available.
A bearing that has the correct dimensions may still be unsuitable if its internal clearance, speed capability, cage, lubrication or electrical insulation differs from the original application.

If shaft voltage continues to discharge through the bearing, pitting, fluting and abnormal noise can return.
At the same time, an insulated bearing should not be treated as a universal cure. Grounding condition, installation quality, lubrication, fits and the condition of the complete drive unit must also be checked.

Vehicle bus voltage alone cannot determine bearing suitability.
The actual voltage acting across a bearing depends on the inverter switching characteristics, motor structure, grounding design, cable arrangement, lubrication and other system capacitances.
A bearing tested to a specified DC breakdown voltage should not be interpreted as being directly exposed to the complete battery voltage. TFL reviews the actual bearing-voltage and operating conditions before recommending a solution for a 400 V or 800 V platform.
Outer-ring coating is the most common configuration because it electrically separates the bearing from the housing and is generally easier to manufacture, inspect and install.
The coating should normally cover the relevant ring surface and side faces to reduce the possibility of current bypassing the insulating layer.
In many cases, yes.
TFL can manufacture selected coated bearings with the same nominal boundary dimensions as the original bearing. However, the final fit, coating thickness, housing tolerance, radial clearance and installation method must still be checked.
The coating should not be struck, scratched or subjected to uncontrolled installation force during assembly.
